I’d Rather Be Reading

Best and Worst Reads of 2018

Over the last year I have been working on 3 different reading challenges.

I set my personal 10-12 goal books at the beginning of each school year. I always tried to include at least 1 nonfiction, 1 something spiritual, 1 new author, and 2-3 new books by favorite authors. I very rarely make it through all the titles I plan to, but I find it helpful to plan to read diverse books.

I discovered in 2018 that you can set a Goodreads reading challenge goal. It automatically updates with e-books I read or I can add audio & paperbacks. I am excited to share that I surpassed my goal of 40 books (jet-lag led to middle of the night holiday reading)!I still have 2 days and a long flight before 2018 is officially over- maybe I’ll finish another book or two.

I still write down all the titles and authors in the back of my bullet journal, but I liked having both records.

In 2018 I pushed myself even further by trying the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge. This pushed me to read EVEN more diverse books! I managed to read books from 9 out of the 12 categories. I read and listened to books and authors I’d never heard of before. Many of these categories led me to books I loved & new authors I want to read more of.

I’ve been trying to read Boys on the Boat for nearly a year and a half. Everyone in my family loved it, but for some reason I’m still toting around the paperback on every vacation thinking one day I will finish this book.

How many books did you read this year? What were your favorites?

  1. Reading has been one of your passions for as long as I have known you. When I saw this post, it reminded me I need to take more time out of my life to read.
Thanks for inspiring me to read more.

  2. I did the MMD Reading Challenge this year too! I completed 10 out of the 12 categories— it was so fun to be pushed in new literary directions!

    Here’s my list:
    Classic: Emma by Jane Austen
Book Rec’md: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
Translation: Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
In a Day: A Summer to Die by Lois Lowry
Fav Author: Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah
    Lib/Indie Recm’d: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Atwood (and I don’t recm’d myself!)
Memoir: Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington
Diff Author: The Girl With Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee

In total I read 23 books (4 nonfiction) during 2018. Not my strongest year but probably my most diverse year! Oh, and one of my books was a recommendation from you-The Other Einstein! 🙂
